Objectives: The course is aimed to develop the engineering know
-how combined with a significant amount of more basic scientific subjects. This strong background is needed to better understand nanotechnology, using either a bottom-up approach, in the case of optical and electronic devices, either a top-down approach for nanocomposites and nanocrystalline materials.
The course requires a solid background in industrial engineering (applied thermodynamics, solid mechanics, fluid dynamic, mechanical technology among others), providing further knowledge of the basic phenomena underline the behaviour and transformation processes of materials and nanomaterials (chemistry, physics, computational mechanics, transport phenomena, physical chemistry)
. Besides these subjects, deeper knowledge of technological nature is provided, including the measure of materi
als properties, the design methodology of new materials and the design and planning of new transformation processes, especially those which deal with physical and/or chemical transformations and those devoted to the fabrication of nanomaterials. Classes courses are focused on the complex structural-property-process relations for different materials. In fact, for each type of material and nanomaterial, only a thorough knowledge of these relations leads to the understanding of highly complex problems in this field. Great
attention is given to the interdisciplinary aspects
. The focus is on materials chemistry and physics, transformation processes, materials properties, mechanics of mater
ials and nanotechnology. This approach favours a “cross fertilization” between the different subjects and make possible to deal with complex design and manufacturing problems them fromdifferent points of view and using different approaches to find solutions.
