Objectives: Electrical Engineers master a wide-band knowledge of different disciplines that are needed to deal with the demanding challenges of today jobs, both in the manufacturing and research and development (R&D) worlds. Their skills shall not be and, indeed, are not only focused on production, transmission and distribution of electric energy, but cover also the many, highly-diversified electric and electronic applications in industries, households, services, transportations and electromagnetic compatibility. A broad and in-depth knowledge of mathematics and physics represents the required background of an Electrical Engineer. Significant skills in computer science, automation and electronics are required as well, since they play a significant role in the modern Electrical Engineering.
The M.Sc. programme in Electrical Engineering allows students to gain solid skills in theoretical, experimental and applied areas of electrical engineering. Students can focus on different technological areas and develop diversified expertise, depending on their learning plan. In particular, the following subject areas are addressed in the courses foreseen by this study programme:
• Circuit theory;
• Electromagnetic compatibility and numerical electromagnetics;
• Measurement techniques and diagnosis;
• Design of electrical machinery;
• Production of electricity and electricity plants;
• Transmission, distribution and utilization systems;
• Advanced industrial applications (e.g., automation systems, electric traction systems, e-vehicles);
• Electricity market economic and financial applications.
The main topics covered by the M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano are: power systems, Smart Grid, renewable sources, transport systems (including Smart Transportation and e-vehicles), electrical machines design, power electronics, industrial automation.
